The Meaning of NPK: The term "NPK" refers to the three essential macro-nutrient elements of fertilizer, which are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). For example, a fertilizer with an NPK ratio of "5-3-2" contains 5% nitrogen, 3% phosphorus, and 2% potassium. In general, nitrogen helps with chlorophyll production to make plants greener and enable photosynthesis. (A nitrogen deficiency can make leaves turn yellow.) Phosphorus promotes healthy root growth, and can speed up plant maturity and make plants more resistant to disease and cold weather. Potassium works as an all-around macro-nutrient that helps plants absorb water through osmosis and boosts enzyme activity.
